About Dr. Charging Thunder

Dr. Charging Thunder is a highly regarded Lakota family physician, deeply rooted in the Nebraska Panhandle where she was born and raised.  She learned Spanish from her father and Lakota culture/values from her mother.  Growing up underprivileged, she and her family worked as farm workers.  She developed a first-hand understanding of the unique challenges faced by rural communities.  Motivated by rising healthcare costs and provider shortages, she established Deer Valley Clinic to ensure accessible, high-quality medical care for all.

Deer Valley Clinic serves as an affordable direct-pay option for patients who are uninsured, manage high deductibles, or struggle to find timely appointments. We offer streamlined scheduling, same-day availability, and bilingual services in both English and Spanish. While we currently offer Telehealth services, we look forward to providing in-person visits once our physical clinic space is completed. Our practice is a proud supporter of both holistic and complementary medicine.

A graduate of the RHOP program at Chadron State College, Dr. Charging Thunder earned her MD from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 2008 and completed her Family Medicine Residency at UNMC in 2011.   Her extensive clinical background includes serving underserved populations in Omaha and the Nebraska Panhandle, bringing deep expertise and compassion to her practice in Gordon.   She worked at Gordon Memorial Hospital as a CNA prior to attending college and returned to work there in 2015 when she and her family returned from Omaha.  She and her husband Dave have 6 children and 8 grandchildren.

What is Atopy?

Atopy is a genetic tendency to develop allergic conditions such as hay fever/allergic rhinitis, asthma, and eczema.

Spring allergy season is right around the corner, so if you are affected by allergies, or have recurrent sinus issues, it may be time to start taking your nasal steroid (Flonase aka fluticasone or something similar) to prevent nasal congestion and runny nose due to pollens.  The best time to start is 1 month prior to when your symptoms usually start.  Using a nasal rinse such as NeilMed sinus rinse (I prefer the bottle kit) prior to the nasal spray will control symptoms even better.  Both are available over the counter.

Allergies, Asthma, and Eczema are conditions that tend to co-occur in susceptible persons.  If you have one, you are prone to the others.   When allergies are uncontrolled, one can develop asthma symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing, or excessive coughing.  In children, excessive coughing after exertion is a sign of exercise-induced asthma.  Using an albuterol inhaler or nebulizer 15 minutes prior to activity can prevent an asthma flare if triggered by activity. Food and other environmental allergies can also cause eczema to flare.

If you have severe allergies, you should have a couple EpiPens.  It is needed during a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis.  This occurs after a person comes into contact with an allergen and rapidly develops symptoms in at least 2 different systems: LUNGS (wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, cough),  ENT (itching or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, tight throat), HEART (rapid heart rate, chest pain, low blood pressure, dizziness, passing out), GI (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea), SKIN (itching, swelling, rash, redness), NEURO (confusion, foggy thinking, headache, feeling of impending doom).  If this occurs, administer epinephrine in the outer thigh or in the fat just under the skin such as on your stomach.

Epipens can also be life saving for those in rural areas with asthma.  If an asthma attack continues despite using your rescue inhaler back to back or a nebulizer every 15 minutes and you cannot get to an emergency room rapidly, use your EpiPen.  If epinephrine is given, you need to go to the ER for monitoring since symptoms can recur. Standard observation periods are 4-6 hours though if the symptoms were mild and rapidly resolve, 2 hours of observation may be sufficient. However, make sure you have additional epinephrine pens available at home.

If you need prescriptions for albuterol or epinephrine, see your provider or call for an appointment!

About Us

With the rising costs of healthcare and insurance premiums, as well as the shortage of healthcare providers which make access to care difficult, she decided to open Deer Valley Clinic as an affordable cash pay option for those who are uninsured, have high deductibles, are unable to get in rapidly to see a provider, find it difficult to get to town, or otherwise have difficulty acquiring care.  Deer Valley Clinic offers easy scheduling, same day appointments, affordable prices, and quality care in English and Spanish. Currently, Telehealth visits are offered with home visits possible for those who have difficulty getting out of their homes; however, once the clinic space is completed, office visits will be available. Holistic and complimentary medicine practices are supported.

The name of the clinic comes from the rich Lakota history of the area.  Before the area was settled and towns were established, the area was called "Deer Valley" by the Lakota.   It was an expansive area where deer were always plentiful thanks to the Niobrara River and other local creeks.
